In Good Company

Great news: The guest bedroom is getting utilized!

Even better news: Apparently it's not as hard as we thought!

Welcome Dave and Agata!

Rich's cousin Dave and his wife Agata are visiting this week from Chicago, hence the lapse in posts. They arrived Tuesday evening, after a short weekend stay in Tokyo, and despite fighting some jet lag, they've powered through to see some major sights of the city in the last two days. Unfortunately, RCP has had to work, so I've been playing tour guide, and despite my use of a traditional paper map and guide book, we haven't gotten lost. However, truth be told, we've referred to Google Maps on the IPhone a FEW times....you know, just to double check my navigation.

Wing Night in Itaewon

Every Tuesday is "Wing Night" in Itaewon and for a mere 30 cents per wing, you can enjoy perhaps the most delicious albeit unhealthy American bar-food staple. We tend to frequent 3 Alley Pub, as their wings are somewhat Korea-fied and a nice deviation from the typical "buffalo style" wings we're used to at home. Plus, we wouldn't want anything to take the place of our favorite buffalo wings from The Candlelight Inn back in Scarsdale, NY. 3 Alley Pub is somewhat reminiscent of a dive bar you might find in a place like Wisconsin (I imagine, I've never been to a Wisconsin dive bar), complete with floral upholstered booths, a strangly enclosed patio with patio furniture, old men who look like permanent fixtures at the bar and too much cigarette smoke to even comment on.

There are 5 flavors of wings at 3 Alley Pub: Mild, Teriyaki, Honey Garlic, Hot and Insane. "Mild" is of course not completely mild, "Teriyaki" is smothered in sauce and delicious, "Honey Garlic" isn't memorable, "Hot" is actually bearable only after being slathered in ranch dressing and  "Insane"? I'll just give the description that one of our friends gave after they finished crying: "It tastes like gasoline and my lips are numb." Another friend almost ran outside to go buy some milk after eating one. "Insane" by all accounts is almost inedible.

As usual, RCP tried to challenge Cousin Dave to an "Insane Challenge" but after claiming jet lag as a handicap, he bowed out. Rich won't touch the "Insane" wings, so the challenge would only have been between Cousin Dave and his own personal pain tolerance, and you have to order a minimum of 10 wings but at 30 cents a wing, what would it have mattered if Cousin Dave couldn't have made it past one bite, leaving a whole plate of inedible wings? What entertainment it would have been!

Cousin Dave, the "Insane Wing Challenge" still stands.

Wing Night: The best remedy for jet lag.
Mmmmmmm.

Teriyaki flavored wings; so perfect they look fake.

This was taken at last week's Wing Night...

....as was this.....

....Wing Night is not for an epicurean palette. It's simple, modest and frugal...
and so worth the miles and miles one has to run the following morning
in order to burn off the finger-licking goodness.

Stay tuned for the trip to Gyeongbokgung Palace...too many pictures to post in one night....
