- Langkawi, is known as the Jewel of Kedah.
- The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border, and is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea.
- Langkawi means reddish brown eagle in colloquial Malay.
- Islam is the primary religion.
- Langkawi was traditionally thought to be cursed. However, in 1986 the prime minister decided to transform it into a tourist resort, planning many of the resorts himself.
